Huhmari abounds with fishing tal

Höytiäinen Lake

Finland’s 15th largest lake with an area of ca. 293 km². The length of the lake is ca. 40 km and its width about 20 km. The lake’s deepest point measures 58.6 m. The quality of the water in the main basin has been classified as excellent; the central and southern parts are typical low-nutrient waters, just right for lake trout. At the moment the fish stock is in excellent condition. Each year the lake is stocked with an abundance of lake trout and bass. Höytiäinen Lake is one of the most popular lakes for lure fishing in North Karelia.
Fishermen have gathered great catches during the Lake Trout Meet organized annually in mid-October.

Year 2006

* On Saturday 61 boat crews caught 44 lake trout.
* On Sunday 37 boat crews caught 10 lake trout.
(bad weather)
* Smallest fish was 55 cm and the largest weighed 3.14 kg.

Year 2007

* On Saturday 70 boat crews caught 15 lake trout.
* On Sunday 32 boat crews caught 15 lake trout.
* Smallest size for bass was 55 cm and lake trout 60 cm.
* Over the weekend fishermen caught about a dozen fish weighing more than three kilos.

Each boat crew was permitted to bring only one lake trout daily to be weighed.

Year 2008

At the moment, Höytiäinen Lake has an extremely robust stock of pike perch, and the perch is, for the most part, ready for the frying pan. Höytiäinen has a long tradition of ice-fishing for whitefish in the spring. Most of the whitefish is small in size, but each year the lake is stocked with a larger type of whitefish called plankton whitefish. Höytiäinen is also the home to the rare, lake-spawning grayling, an excellent fish for fly fishing.

Huhmari provides excellent fishing opportunities on Höytiäinen Lake. There are two ramps for casting boats onto the lake, a docking pier, not to mention the excellent accommodation, restaurant and entertainment services offered at Lomakeskus Huhmari. Huhmari has two motor boats (5 HP and 8 HP) and several rowboats to rent. During the winter, you can rent ice-fishing equipment and ice bores. Huhmari is also a fun place to organize ice-fishing competitions. The beach café is an excellent spot for the hub of the competition and the beach is just 20 meters away.
